Director Lee Daniels (Precious) is not the first African-American to gain an Oscar nomination; that honor goes to John Singleton (Boys in the Hood). He’s also not the first gay director to grasp the honor either; in fact, Gus van Sant has been nominated twice (Good Will Hunting, Milk). And even though Daniels’ achievement will no doubt be overshadowed by the divorcees (James Cameron and Kathryn Bigelow), the Academy’s nomination of the first gay African-American is both significant and well deserved.

According to the Associated Press, Microsoft has recently donated $100,000 to Washington Families Standing Together in an effort to support Referendum 71.
So far, the committee in favor of passing R-71 has raised approximately $780,000 with Microsoft’s donation being the largest they’ve received. Protect Marriage Washington, the committee against R-71, has raised approximately $60,000.
Microsoft isn’t the only large corporation in favor of additional gay rights. Other companies who go on the record supporting the movement are Nike, Vulcan and Boeing.
