The fifteenth Mikrofest took place nearly all day Saturday at the Hall of the Woods just outside of Olympia. The event was organized through the label Brown Interior Music by Andrew Dorsett and Mark Morrison. More than twenty bands, mostly from Olympia and the surrounding area, played between 1:00PM and 2:30AM the next morning. The series has been taking place for about the last three years and, as opposed to other music festivals that span out over several days, Mikrofest’s intention is to squeeze everything into a matter of hours. This time around, Mikrofest took place at Hall of the Woods, an events venue and home forged out of a cabin. The home allegedly used to be in shambles until local legend, the Dark Dentist, bought and remodeled it. Similar to the other properties he owns, including the black houses and coffee shop Sizizis, Hall of the Woods has a dark, ethereal yet nostalgic mood. Sparse, unfiltered lighting hung high in the wooden rafters. Some of the bulbs shone directly over hanging bits of bark and vines, casting harsh shadows on the walls and floor. At the front of the room were red velvet curtains lined with golden tassels.

Bands such as LAKE, which both Dorsett and Morrison play in, and Karl Blau got the audience gently swaying with their soft, inspirational funk folk songs.

Later in the night, Arrington de Dionyso’s Malakait Dan Singa encouraged head bangs and free form convulsions.

Lapuda wrapped Mikrofest up, creating fuzzy soundscapes that sounded like vintage wooden boats and lightning storms over a dark blue ocean. The few audience members remaining slowly moved to the floor, some even lying down, to take in the accompanying images projected on a nearby wall.
