It pains me every time I look in the sports section of the newspaper and look at the NL West standings. There are the Dodgers alone in first place (currently 34-15). Being from San Diego, I am a die-hard Padre fan, and am excited to see them in 2nd place. But in the NL West, 2nd place is great, but it currently means you are 9 games out of first place. 9 games! To put this in perspective, the Houston Astros are currently in last place (18-27) in their division in the NL Central, and they are 9 games out of first place! The Padres are playing decent baseball at 24-23, but currently that only warrants a 9 game gap between first and second place. Simply put, the Dodgers are just on fire now.

The Toronto Blue Jays are a pleasant surprise this year in major league baseball. Picked by most most people to finish fourth or fifth in their division, the Jays are off to a hot start with a 27-15 record, good for first place in the competitive AL East. The AL East boasts of three of the best teams in baseball. The Yankees, Redsox, and Rays are easily 3 of the top 10 teams in baseball, so the fact that the Jays are leading their division is extremely impressive. In their past 10 games the Jays are 7-3, which included a recent 4 game sweep of the Chicago Whitesox. This hot start has many people wondering if the Toronto Blue Jays are the real deal or not.

Rarely is a band comprised of only two members. Besides the White Stripes, can you name any band that has only two members in it? (No googling bands here!) Traditionally, bands will have a guitarist, bassist, drummer, and singer. That’s four people right there. If the guitarist is the singer, then that is only three. Plus, you can also add additional people playing instruments such as horns, flutes, trombones, trumpets, and others. But the Black Keys are no traditional band. The band is comprised of two members, Dan Auerbach, guitarist, singer, and Patrick Carney, drummer. The band blends rock n’ roll with blues, creating a rich sound suitable for any rock enthusiast.

“I’m a rolling thunder, pouring rain. I’m comin’ on like a hurricane. My lightning’s flashing across the sky. You’re only young but you’re gonna die.”
These are the opening lyrics to ACDC’s “Hells Bells”, the theme song that is blasted out of stadium speakers for closer Trevor Hoffman whenever he enters in a save situation in a baseball game. Hoffman, 41, has been closing games since 1993 when he started his career with the Florida Marlins. Hoffman only pitched in 28 games with the Marlins that year, upon which he was then traded to the San Diego Padres. From 1993 to 2008 Hoffman was an iconic figure for the Padres. During his 16 year stay with the Friars Hoffman accumulated 552 saves, putting him into first place on the all time saves list. Combined with the two saves he got with the Marlins, Hoffman has a whopping total of 554 saves in his career.
