New ‘abstinence-only’ study is misleading

The Washington Post published an article yesterday claiming that “abstinence-only programs might work.”  The article presents a study published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine where 662 African American students in the 6th and 7th grades were placed into random groups to evaluate the efficiency of an abstinence-focused education in young students.

The study separated the students into four groups: the first group participated in an 8-hour abstinence-focused class, the second group participated in an 8-hour safer sex-only class that focused on condom use, the third group participated in 8 and 12-hour classes that integrated both, and the fourth participated in a healthy-living class that focused on other ways to be healthy not relating to sexual activity.

Two years later, the students from each of the four groups reported whether or not they had lost their virginity. Fewer of the abstinence-focused students (33%)  reported losing their virginity than did the safer sex-only students (52%). Students who participated in the comprehensive program had less sexual partners than those in the control group (the healthy-living class).

White house is on the offensive against Fox News

October 27th, 2009 Kat Catlett 10 comments

fox-news-logoMost people can agree that Fox News isn’t an unbiased news source. White House representatives are now going on the record trying to get Fox to admit this.

Interim Communications Director Anita Dunn was one of the first official White House reps to go on the record saying that Fox News isn’t a real news source. Surprisingly, other valid news organizations went up in arms at this accusation.

Always wanting to be a step ahead of other states and currently in the middle of a terrible budget deficit to the tune of $16 billion due to the recession, California may become the first state in the U.S. to legalize marijuana for recreational use and therefore make a killing off of taxes on the drug.

The Snitch, the San Francisco Weekly’s blog, broke the news yesterday that Assemblyman Tom Ammiano will introduce legislation to legalize marijuana in all forms, removing “all penalties in California law on cultivation, transportation, sale, purchase, possession, or use of marijuana, natural THC, or paraphernalia for persons over the age of 21,” according to Ammiano’s press secretary Quintin Mecke.

UPDATE: Sundborg named defendant in alleged sexual abuse cover up

Seattle University President Fr. Steve Sundborg

Seattle University President Fr. Steve Sundborg

It’s pandemonium down here at the Spectator office as we just broke the news that Father Sundborg, president of Seattle University, has been named as a defendant in a sexual abuse lawsuit. The victims, who are holding a press confrence tomorrow, allege that Sundborg withheld information and had a “hell file” containing very sensitive, not good information about Jesuit Priests and their exploits.

The more than 150 cases against the Jesuits that were settled in 2007 with a $50 million payout from the Jesuits did not previously name Sundborg as a defendant, but the current lawsuit claims that if he had acted on knowledge held in the files, at least one of the sexual offenders could have been stopped before they molested in the 1990s.

Stay with us for updates about the events as they become known.
