TV sets look forward to one Sunday in particular every year. It is the day they feel the most love.

Super Bowl Sunday.

For one reason or another, America loves the Super Bowl. But why? What is so enticing about hours of stop and go ball playing? What makes this day a day to be in front of the TV? The truth is there are multiple incentives for being a Super Bowl fanatic.

1. Football

The first reason someone would set aside this day to watch football is because he or she actually enjoys watching football. For many, it is more than a sport, it is a passion. Strong loyalties to teams and alma maters make for entertaining competition among fans, especially within households and friend groups. These people are easy to spot because they are generally decorated in jerseys and face paint and they might occasionally break out in a rendition of a popular team cheer.

2. Commercials

The second motivation for staying plastered to the TV screen for an afternoon of football is for the commercials. Companies and advertisers have learned to take advantage of the number of football fanatics glued to the game. For many, commercials are not just enjoyable; they are the primary reason for watching. According to the Huffington Post, 30 seconds of advertising time costs a record $3.5 million on average.

3. Food

What would a game day be without food?

Notorious for the presence of copious amounts of dip and Buffalo wings, Super Bowl Sunday isn’t a day to diet. The Food Network suggests chorizo and shrimp quesadillas and smoky guacamole or Caribbean chicken wings, among a myriad of other recipes available on their website. If you aren’t a fan of football and could care less about expensive commercials, then perhaps you can still find enjoyment from the nachos.

4. Madonna

The Super Bowl can even capture the attention of people who despise football, commercials and spicy chicken fingers. If someone has a special love for singers, then the halftime show will pull them in. This year, Madonna will take the stage and, according to her, she is anxious about the performance.

“I am so nervous you have no idea,” she said in an interview with Anderson Cooper. “I have to put on the greatest show on earth, in the middle of the greatest show on earth…that’s a lot of pressure.”

Regardless of your motivation for watching the Super Bowl, today is the day to indulge your reasoning.

So pull on your jersey, record your favorite commercials, have a few chicken wings and wait for Madonna’s performance.

This is why America loves the Super Bowl.
