Seattle University’s director of athletics Bill Hogan announced the end of a nation-wide search for a head men’s basketball coach Thursday morning with the hiring of former University of Washington assistant coach Cameron Dollar.
At a press conference in the Student Center Hearth at 1 p.m., President Stephen Sundborg, S.J. prefaced the official announcement by listing non-athletic related accolades such as the capital campaign and the most recent Truman Scholar, Aerica Banks. Hogan only missed his initial hiring date by 13 hours after originally hoping to hire someone within 10 days of former Seattle U coach Joe Callero’s departure.
“[Dollar] is a proven winner,” said Hogan in a press release. “He has been on a national stage as both a coach and a player and has great contacts in the region, our core recruiting area.”
The announcement comes one day after the spring signing period began, April 15, which is important because Dollar is reknowned for his ability to recruit top talent. Rivals.com listed Dollar as the no. 2 assistant ready to take a head coaching position and a top 25 recruiter. Dollar has been integral in recruiting some of the nation’s top talent for the Huskies including Jon Brockman, Spencer Hawes, Quincy Pondexter, Isaiah Thomas and Abdul Gaddy.
Even in a day of celebration, Dollar won’t take the day off.
“We’re gonna work out today as soon as this is over,” Dollar said.
